Description

Built in 1933 by CCC Co. 1476 Camp F-1, this 100' Aermotor 100' steel tower with LS-40 7’x7’ cab was the first tower to be constructed on the first Southern National Forest (Kisatchie 1929). CCC Co. 1476 was the first CCC company in Louisiana. Co. 1476, Camp F-1, was also tasked with road construction, telephone line installation, fire pre-suppression and suppression, as well as other tasks. The Catahoula Tower (named for the first unit on the new National Forest) was manned by this CCC unit until the disbanding of the CCC in 1942. At that time, US Forest Service personnel took over operation of the tower until 1982 when it was taken out of service for State over-flights. The tower was removed by the LA National Guard who used it for demolition practice. It took two attempts because the first attempt caused the tower to on pop off its foundational pilings but remained standing.
