The lookout structure on Luera Peak was a wooden platform in the top of a 35 foot pine tree with a metal, office chair attached. The chair faced south and the lookout was able to scan to the south, east and west without too much difficulty, but had to turn completely around in the chair to look north causing the structure to lean precariously to one side. Governor Bruce King petitioned the New Mexico Legislature in 1972, 1973 and 1974 for a new 60-foot steel lookout tower for Luera Peak. A bill giving $37,000 for the lookout died in the Senate Finance Committee without receiving a hearing. The chair lookout became too dangerous and only staffed for half of the 1975 season before being removed from the peak in 1976.
