Mt. Sedgwick was first staffed in 1918 by David and Lucy Whiteside who had a ranch at the base of the mountain. David was the fire lookout and Lucy the smoke chaser. Lucy is credited with being New Mexico's first lady fire lookout. But, she went on to become more famous as Mother Whiteside a popular hotel, cafe owner and mid-wife. The local library in Grants is named after her. Mt. Sedgwick is the highest point in the Zuni Mountains.
