The Moon Tower started its history in 1935 at the Summit Ridge Lookout site. The tower was built by Ed Mason's crew of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The crew had a little difficulty locating the exact location where the lookout was to be erected and put it on private land a half a mile west into Wyoming. Upon realizing their mistake, they moved it by balancing it on logs pulled by a tractor. The lookout served on Summit Ridge for five years. The lookout was moved to a high meadow south of Moon Campground in 1940 where it served as a secondary lookout until 1965. In 1965, a crew under Kenny Sallee sawed the lookout down and buried it where it stood.
