The remains of the Hardscrabble Knob fire tower now lie on the ground. A partially standing cabin previously used by lookouts is nearby.
Hardscrabble Knob is the only known example of a fire tower of this design. It is either an Aeromotor windmill tower or a CAA aircraft beacon tower that was fitted with a unique 6'x6' cab. It was built and used by the U.S. Forest Service.
