The Sand Mountain lookout tower has been converted into a communications tower with directional microwave antennas. The cab and stairs have been removed, but the steel structure remains. This tower is secured by fencing and is located on Town of Wytheville property, and the access road is closed to motorized traffic. It is open as a hiking trail as part of the Big Survey.
